“The 2012 Chevy Silverado: it can take you anywhere. Including the middle of nowhere.”

i was somewhat surprised by a commercial tonight– it aired during a replay on cnn of the sc republican debate– the commercial was for a chevy silverado pick up truck that was obviously a 4×4 and also a 4 door–
four “typical” white guys were in the truck and they kept stopping to check the cell phone reception– the ultimate goal being a location with no cell phone reception–

the roads that they were driving on were country roads though you got the impression that these four guys weren’t from the country– with their electronic gadgets and their expensive shiny pickup it appeared that they would fit in better in suburbia– as they passed what appeared to be an elderly man with a dog, a passenger in the back seat rolled up his window as though to hide or perhaps to make himself safer from the man and the dog– perhaps it was so he wouldn’t have to look at them–

the old man and the dog? well, the old man had ragged clothing on and appeared unkempt with a shaggy beard hanging onto his chest– the dog appeared to be just a barking mutt whose coat seemed matted and dirty– they both stood in front of a dilapidated structure that was perhaps the only shelter that they had– who knows if they were hungry, sick or in need of assistance– in the background you could hear what was either a guitar or a banjo implying a “dueling banjos” theme–

it probably shouldn’t strike me as odd but during these times of economic hardship should we really be knocking the poor and the disadvantaged while celebrating the overindulgence of others? isn’t this the main complaint about the republican party and the presidential candidates? isn’t this the complaint of the 99% to the upper-class 1%–
but then, i reminded myself that it was in fact a republican presidential debate– why shouldn’t four young white guys be going off into the forest with a 35,000.00+ vehicle? after all, they were only trying to escape the dog eat dog world while pretending they were in touch with nature– as one commenter on you tube stated– “couldn’t they have just turned off their phones?”
