“no gov’t healthcare”

August 27, 2009 jbh Leave a comment

i saw this sign on the way to work the other day and had to turn around to get a second look and a picture of it– i’m not sure whose property it is actually on– could be the house behind it with the american flag but maybe not– i would think most folks flying the american flag would be flying the flag to represent the unifying qualities of our country and not the divisive ones– possibly they are just excercising their free speech– i would also think that someone who was against “gov’t healthcare” wouldn’t be supportive of our armed services as they all receive “gov’t healthcare”– probably wouldn’t care for the elderly either as they all receive “gov’t healthcare”– surely someone flying the american flag would have respect for the elderly . . . well, maybe not– “gov’t healthcare”??? maybe they are referring to individuals on medicaid like children and the mentally ill and people out of work that are struggling until their next job– wait a second . . . i get it . . . this is obviously an individual that doesn’t have “no gov’t healthcare”– we definitely need to get them some healthcare now–

peace signs and doors

August 27, 2009 jbh Leave a comment

i have for the past four years tried to always keep a peace sign hanging from the barn here at abbey lane–this meant that during one of our many treks to woodstock we would be purchasing a new flag– any reason to go to woodstock is a good one– i had the last flag hanging over a section where i had promised kathleen that i would replace a sliding door– it added some character to the barn and in the middle of this years rain and gloom i missed the light provided by the door, grabbed the chainsaw and then constructed a new door out of some old oak stairs that i had replaced (that ought to keep it from swinging in the wind)– of course the question remained, where to put the peace sign– front and center of course–

the mountains win again

August 20, 2009 jbh Leave a comment

the past year has been a year of new disabilities and yet at the same time an opening to new abilities and possibilities– meniere’s has made my ability to drive on major highways an impossibility and i now find new meaning in the song “i can’t drive 55″– i still don’t like the song, but now for different reasons– when i drive, i can drive 40 mph with no problem at all yet i have to re-route all my traveling to roads that are more appropriate– i live in the country and work 26 miles away in the city– (if i am home when the nuclear bombs hit i should survive the initial blast– yee-haw!!!) as most major highways do, the highways in my area go around the obstacles (mountains) and follow the path of least resistance (the valley)– my route now takes me directly over the mountains on the roads that are used less by the general public– as has often been the case throughout most of life, i never saw the beauty that was right in front of my eyes– for the first time in 25 years i can now appreciate more the fact that i live in the mountains–

healthcare, thoughts

i have to admit that i have backed off from my observation/participation/blogging of politics since the presidential election and with typical apathy i have watched from the sidelines nary making a peep as issues have come and gone– however, this whole healthcare issue is a continual irrittant that has even stirred my apathy– (in my own defense I should also point out that I have been dealing with my own health issues and have been trying to accentuate positive points in my life)

adding further onto the issue . . . i work in a healthcare setting and i continually see the impact that our economy and the healthcare insurance companies has upon individuals being able to receive healthcare–

from personal experience and the experiences of others close to me i have seen the triumphs and the failures of our healthcare system over the past 30 years and I am dumbfounded to think that anyone even begins to question the fact that universal healthcare is a right that should be provided equally for all–

i listen to the news . . . a man from tennessee states how he needs “affordable” healthcare– a local news reporter talks about present public healthcare options as “welfare” which brings forth negative connotations of freeloaders asking for handouts– affordable? why does cost even need to be involved?

again, i am dumbfounded to think that anyone even begins to question the fact that universal healthcare is a right that should be provided equally for all–

how many friends and relatives need to die from preventable, treatable illnesses before americans wake up? perhaps we all need to personally have at least one major loss before we will finally wake up to our responsibilities to our fellow humans– it amazes me in a country where so many people claim to be christians that so many people really don’t give a rat’s ass about one another–

ain’t that america?
