posting on "the blog"

it’s taken me awhile but i finally feel comfortable with this thing called abbey lane– the identity of this blog in relation to others nagged at me for some time and i finally just started to ignore it (the blog) and amazingly, now it all seems much better and in possession of an identity of its own– when i first started working on it, it was really an extension from a web page which i had created back in the nineties as i put my claim on a small piece of cyber-space– we are possessive bastards aren’t we??

being new to blogs as most of us are, because they just happen to be new, i used other blogs as markers and guidelines to build this sucker– let’s see . . . he put a 2×4 over here so i’ll cram a 2×6 in a relative position– tap it with the sledge a couple times and it does indeed appear to work– honey, i told you i could use the chainsaw in the house– look it i done built!!!

but . . . again, these were only markers and guidelines– at first there was the asinine assumption on my part that i would be posting on a daily basis– in reality, this is fun but not something that i feel like being tied to– (whipping post by the allman brothers playing in the background) so i started writing less and only really about issues that i really care about or find myself totally pissed off about– also there are many good blogs out there that do the reporting thing very well and if there is one thing that i dislike it is to read something and then have to follow twelve links through twelve different blogs to get to the original source–

so . . . i have been posting personal writing and music as i have been going along here and with a post here and there about current issues etc. etc. i do believe this creature has taken on an identity of it’s own–

an aside– shouldn’t this whole concept have been labeled “the blob” instead of the blog? definitely more appropriate–

molly ivins 1944-2007

molly ivins article “stand up against the surge“, which was originally published on thursday 011107, ends with the following paragraph– a paragraph that i think important to note as it is a request from molly to all readers and listeners to raise hell–

“We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war. Raise hell. Think of something to make the ridiculous look ridiculous. Make our troops know we’re for them and trying to get them out of there. Hit the streets to protest Bush’s proposed surge. If you can, go to the peace march in Washington on Jan. 27. We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, ‘Stop it, now!’”

a tribute written for molly by her editor anthony zurcher caused a smile to emerge on my face with it’s closing paragraphs–

“For me, Molly’s greatest words of wisdom came with three children’s books she gave my son when he was born. In her inimitable way, she captured the spirit of each in one-sentence inscriptions. In “Alice in Wonderland,” she offered, “Here’s to six impossible things before breakfast.” For “The Wind in the Willows,” it was, “May you have Toad’s zest for life.” And in “The Little Prince,” she wrote, “May your heart always see clearly.”

Like the Little Prince, Molly Ivins has left us for a journey of her own. But while she was here, her heart never failed to see clear and true — and for that, we can all be grateful.”

if i had to name three of my favorite books, these three would definitely be at the top of the list and it is nice to know that molly also saw these as guiding pieces to accompany a young mans life– how perfect that someone like molly who was always dealing with the politicians as don quixote dealing with the windmills, was also quite aware of other worlds such as wonderland and toad hall– i hope she was able to escape there often– perhaps she is there now–
