here come the choppers . . .
kathleen and i had the enjoyment of seeing loudon wainwright III tonight at the egg–excellent performance by an artist who bares all– the good/ the bad/ and the ugly– i have always liked loudon’s style and although i haven’t followed him as close as his “biggest fan”, i do like to believe that i have an average fans knowledge of him and his music– one impression that i have always had of loudon as an artist is that he can make me laugh so hard with a song that i could piss my pants and yet in the next song he can make me feel like i need to do the shuffle at the local psych ward with some good happy pills while having a good (manly) cry– he played quite a few songs from his latest cd– he started with the title track “here come the choppers”– this song seems to be earily prophetic of things to come within the usa– other songs from the cd included “hank and fred” a great song about hank williams and fred rogers, “half fist” (my family also shares this attribute), and “nanny” a song about spending time in my home state with his grandmother– excellent choices– i was somewhat thankful that he didn’t play my favorite song from the cd “no sure way”– kathleen would have been checking me in tonight for sure– oh, i have forgotten that he also played “when you leave” which also hits home to hard for to many reasons–
from his previous cd “so damn happy” he played “so damn happy”, “heaven”, and “westchester county”– although i didn’t hear favorites of mine “dead skunk”, “the acid song”, or “i wish i was a lesbian” kathleen and i both left feeling that it was a great perfomance and that his playing and singing was/were excellent–
the opening act michael clem, was new to both kathleen and myself (we only come out of the closet once a week) yet we thought he sounded great and we picked up his cd and managed to get him to autograph it after the show– we will have to pay more attention to him and also look back to the band that he is/was with, EFO/eddie from ohio– i am not familiar with this group also–
